✈ Airplane Makeup & Travel Skincare Essentials
Since we have a tremendously long flight ahead of us ourselves (tomorrow to be exact, we are beyond excited), we thought it'd be interesting to talk about how we prepare our skin for the long drying hours on a plane. Here's what we normally do when travelling for 18+ hours straight. We still want to look and feel good in our skin but the main focus lies on maintaining this feeling throughout the whole journey so that we'll still look somewhat fresh, awake and put together upon our arrival. Just a little sneak peak, the main point is practically moisture, moisture, moisture.. in everything you do.
Our first and most important rule is not to use anything drying on your skin, the plane's aircon will do that for you, it can be really intense. So don't go for your makeup you know will dry out your skin after a few hours, no matter how good it is apart from that. Go without powder for once, otherwise we promise you, your skin won't feel too well after a while. Don't pile products on, no matter what they are, only use thin layers or they will get flaky. This especially applies to concealer in the sensitive eye area, because the thin skin there will dry out even faster.
Basically, for us, BB Creams are a present from the heavens, they are very moisturizing yet decent-coverage, they give you that healthy glow that you can always use an extra of when you are tired from all this travelling and you can layer them without them becoming super cakey, which is a plus if you want to opt for some more coverage when getting of the plane at your destination.
Still, use a good moisturizer underneath, and remember to bring hand cream and a hydrating chap stick with you on the plane. We find ourselves reapplying those all the time while flying, so they will definitely come in handy. For the lips, we personally really love the Maybelline Baby Lips line since they are extremely moisturizing and even slightly tinted to give you a little bit of colour.
Another wonderful product to bring along with you on plane rides is a moisturizing facial spray. Products like these are extremely useful since they not only give you an extra cick of moisture but are also really refreshing to use if you are tired. Plus, they calm down irritated skin, something you can get easily on a plane due to the drying aircon and lack of sleep. You don't want to reapply moisturizer over your BB Cream and if you don't feel like taking everything of and starting anew using something like a thermal spray is a quick and easy alternative, especially if you are transferring flights like we are and want to freshen up a little in between.
If your skin gets oily pretty easily and you are now wondering what you are supposed to to if you can't wear your powder for a whole day you can use blotting paper on your face from time to time and just take the excess oil away instead of piling more product on.
Don't wear anything that needs loads of touch ups and go for products you can sleep in comfortably, nothing smuding, nothing drying, nothing creasing. What we do instead is bringing a minimal amount of products in our hand luggage that we can apply upon arrival. Some eyeliner and mascara are easy to use and don't require a lot of additional tools. And we always make sure to bring some concealer to take some of the deadness away after the arrival.
Obviously there's need to look like you just stept out of a photoshoot, just remember, everybody on that plane is and probably looks just as tired as you are, it's just that in your personal perception you will always notice your own flaws more which will make you feel like you look worse than anyone else. You don't, we promise. Other people don't even notice that much.
What do you do when flying for a long time? Do you wear no make up at all, do you have a whole beauty program pepared for the plane ride, do you apply a full face makeup look before landing? We'd be very happy to hear from you in the comments. Have a nice day and safe flight everyone!
